Calligraphy
Calligraphy has been my passion for over thirty years. With a Fred Eager workbook, bottle of Higgins ink and a Speedball broad pen nib, I taught myself this elegant craft.
In 1980, a group of five Calligraphers in Dallas established a non-profit, Kaligrafos, The Dallas Calligraphy Society, dedicated to advancing the art of beautiful hand lettering. I am a 25-year charter member, past and current president and still dedicated to sharing my passion of calligraphy arts. We calligraphers gather monthly to exchange ideas, hold workshops and serve the community. During the 1980’s, I had worked as a freelance calligrapher until the home personal computer invaded my market. Now I combine watercolor and collage with calligraphy to create beautiful one-of-a-kind works of art that cannot be duplicated by a computer, only copied.
There are now over 300 Calligraphy Guilds in the US and Canada and many more across the seas. We have gathered together annually for the last 25 years at the International Calligraphy Conference to share and teach Calligraphy and lettering arts to others. In 2005, the international conference was held in Dallas with about 500 attendees from all over the world. The Washington Calligraphy Guild and the National Association of Letter Carriers sponsor a calligraphic postal stamped envelope contest yearly that has been widely published.
Calligraphic art is displayed in art gallery shows and other art shows as a fine art. We have finally earned our place in the fine arts community by proving that our skills are true artistic talent. Calligraphy is a thriving art, commanding respect even in today’s high tech world. Calligraphy, the art of beautiful lettering, is in high demand by wedding planners and brides to design wedding invitations and for envelope addressing. The numbers of calligraphic artists is growing and their skill level is advancing rapidly. The personal computer partnered with the World Wide Web has now enabled calligraphers all over the world to communicate with each other, share their art with the world and have a extraordinary new marketing structure. Calligraphy and lettering arts remain my passion.
I want to share, market and sell my calligraphic artwork to the world, one original handmade greeting card at a time. |
